Section A, as per the given pattern, had two unseen passages, one factual and the other discursive (indirect and winding), to test the comprehension, inference and vocabulary skills. The general level of difficulty was easy to moderate. The passages were simple and not too technical. This was one of the highest scoring sections of the paper.
Focus areas included the following:
Scanning for main ideas and passage organisation
MCQs scanning for facts
Reading implicit meanings inferentially.
Vocabulary in context, with synonyms and antonyms
The extract questions based on MCQs also helped to reduce guess-work anxiety and improved the overall accessibility to the students.
This section was similar to previous years. This must have been particularly easy for students who had practised the latest sample papers. It had formal writing questions and grammar-based questions which were closely in accordance with the NCERT standards.
The section was of ‘medium’ difficulty. Students’ common pitfalls would have included confusion between different formats such as notices and formal letters, as well as grammatical mistakes relating to tense consistency and subject-verb agreement. Overall, the grammar part was still predictable and concept-based.
Section C was the most difficult part of the paper and the one which carried the most marks. The questions were from First Flight and Footprints Without Feet and had questions on extracts, short answers and long-answer analytical responses.
The difficulty level was medium to hard. The main reason for this was that most of the questions were based on interpretation, theme and character analysis and not just plain memory. The questions on values and competencies tested students’ critical thinking and understanding of texts. Though there was a high adherence to NCERT, mere reproduction of textbook answers is not enough to get higher marks.
The paper was in total harmony with NCERT as discussed above. The questions were almost 82-85% directly based on prescribed texts and concepts. The paper involved 40-45% competency-based questions indicating the growing focus of CBSE on higher-order thinking skills. The grammar section was as difficult as previous years and the only thing that separated the high scorers from the average was effective time management.
